Dear Nyonyas and Babas,

In this month’s video, I am joined by the esteemed Baba GT Lye, recipient of the inaugural The Stewards of Singapore’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Award, and Baba Raymond Wong, TPAS Assistant Honorary Treasurer.

Baba GT Lye talks about his work spreading Peranakan culture in the region though his roles as a Wayang Peranakan and Dondang Sayang performer, playwright and co-director, roles that had led to him winning this prestigious award in 2020. He excitedly talks about his recently concluded play “Mari Kita Main Wayang” that was staged from 17 – 19 Nov 2023. He teases us with some snippets of his plans lined up in 2024 and 2025.

Based on the positive feedback from our members, the 34th International Baba Nyonya Convention which was held in Melaka from 24 to 26 Oct 2023 was a resounding success. We hope to see you next year in Phuket for the 35th Baba Nyonya International Convention which will be hosted by our sister association, Thai Peranakan Association (TPA) from 15-17 Nov 2024 (which will coincide with the Thai Lantern Festival – Loy Krathong).

Baba Raymond describes what he envisages as the future of kebaya, and gives a preview about the Peranakan Festival, jointly organised with The Peranakan Museum in March 2024.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I wish to take this opportunity to wish all members a restful and festive year-end and I look forward to seeing you next year!

We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Warm wishes,

Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs
