Dear Nyonyas and Babas,
This is not our usual monthly Chakap Chakap—this is a special edition featuring Nyonya Stella Kon, the celebrated playwright behind thee award-winning Emily on Emerald Hill.
Written in 1982 and first performed in Singapore in 1985, Emily of Emerald Hill has since become a beloved classic, with numerous stagings including The Matriarch, an adaptation performed at the 33rd Baba Nyonya International Convention organised by TPAS on 20 November 2021.
In this video, Nyonya Stella shares how the iconic one-woman play was transformed in the 1960s into a full-length musical, featuring characters like Emily’s husband Keong and their children. Recently, when the Commonwealth of World Chinatowns (CWC) approached her to create a dinner show, she eagerly reimagined the script into three 30-minute acts—with songs!—performed by a 4-member cast, accompanied by a sumptuous 4-course dinner served between segments.
We are thrilled to share a sneak peek of what you can expect from this unforgettable dining and theatre experience.
