In this month’s video, I am joined by Baba Low Sze Wee, CEO of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and Nyonya Charmaine Neo, who joined the General Committee (GC) in March this year.

In this video, Baba Sze Wee shares that the mission of the SCCC is to nurture Chinese culture in Singapore and enhance social harmony to achieve the vision of making Chinese culture vibrant and rooted in a cohesive, multi-racial society. He references Professor Wang Gungwu’s recent seminal lecture co-organised by Yale-NUS College and the SCCC titled “What does it mean to be ethnically Chinese in Singapore?” and adds that what is unique about growing up as a Chinese in Singapore is that many of us are exposed to Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka and Hainanese. Going forward, he hopes that more Chinese community groups, including the Peranakan-Chinese, will come forth to collaborate with the SCCC to promote Chinese culture.

Nyonya Charmaine shares that even though it has only been two month since she joined the GC, she has been kept very busy overseeing the registrations of the Baba Malay play-reading sessions and cooking demonstrations, and highlights the two major events which are coming up, namely our social get-together dinner Malam Jolly on 14 July and the 34th Baba Nyonya International Convention in Melaka from 24-26 Nov.

We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Warm wishes,
