A Night of Tok Panjang Grandeur!

Baba Emeric Lau reports on a delightful evening at TPASโ€™ bi-annual fundraising gala held at the Shangri-La Hotel.

What a spectacular night! On 5th September, The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS) hosted its highly anticipated fundraising gala dinner, Tok Panjang Grandeur, at the Shangri-La Singapore. The evening was graced by our Guest of Honour, Ms Jane Ittogi, wife of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

The festivities kicked off at 6:00pm with our vibrant ketak ketik bazaar stalls. Some 300 guests, all dressed up in traditional finery, had a wonderful time chatting and posing for photos as they browsed these heritage booths, which were packed with gorgeous sarong kebayas, twinkling jewellery, indulgent beverages, and delicious Nyonya kueh.

By 7:30pm, everyone was ushered into the ballroom for the main event. Evoking the classic tok panjang (long table feast) tradition, the seating format comprised long communal tables draped in rich scarlet tablecloths, beautifully adorned with stunning, colourful floral arrangements.

The programme was a true feast for the senses. While savouring a specially curated heritage menu prepared by Chef Keon of the Peranakan Mansion (Melaka) and the chefs of Shangri-La, guests were treated to a cheery choral performance from the Peranakan Voices and live music by Stephen Francis and band. It was an unforgettable celebration of community, heritage, and giving.
