About

THE PERANAKAN is an award-winning non-profit magazine by The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS). Its aim is to document, promote and disseminate information on the unique Peranakan culture of Singapore in particular, and Southeast Asia in general.

The magazine is the only regular publication dedicated to providing insights into the rich cultural heritage of the Peranakans. Besides feature articles on material culture such as clothes, jewelry, beadwork and porcelain ware, it also has writers contributing articles on the history, traditions, food and lifestyle of the Babas and Nyonya.

The first issue of THE PERANAKAN appeared as a xeroxed 4-page newsletter in June 1994. Through the years, it has evolved to become a full-fledged magazine and since 2023, into an e-publication with a visually attractive, full-colour format in an easy-to-read style.

THE PERANAKAN is a must-have resource for all things Peranakan. It is read by a wide range of people including antique collectors, museum curators and docents, media professionals, foodies, expatriates, tourists and researchers. In 2018, THE PERANAKAN clinched the Special Interest Media of the Year Award at the Media Publishers Association Singapore Awards.

THE PERANAKAN is the only magazine within the Federation of Peranakan Associations (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia).
