Contrary to many in the community who often lament that we are seeing “the end of the Peranakans”, I am of the view that our culture remains alive and thriving; it continues to evolve, not only in terms of its performative aspects, but in the values that we choose to transmit or omit.

As the incoming Editor of this magazine, I aim to curate content that will appeal across demographics, and specifically to a younger audience, hopefully piquing their interest enough for them to step forward and contribute. Having transited from a hard copy into a responsive digital format, the magazine is likewise seeing an evolution of content, format, and mode of dissemination.

Do expect regular uploads of our features (instead of bi-annually, as was the case with the hard copy), which will also be cross posted on TPAS’ social media channels, thanks to Theresa Tan.

I am grateful to be supported by an excellent team: Creative Adviser John Lee, Designer Joanne Low, Editorial Secretariat Eunice Yap (who is also TPAS’ Head of Membership and Asst. Hon. Secretary), Webmaster Noel Ng, and of course, outgoing Editor Bryan Tan, who I’m happy to share will continue as a magazine contributor even as he takes up a new role in TPAS’ General Committee covering youth outreach.

I wish also to record thanks to TPAS President Genevieve Peggy Jeffs, TPAS Exco and General Committee for their faith in me; former TPAS President Colin Chee and previous magazine Editor Linda Chee for their invaluable support and advice.

The Editorial Committee also thanks our many contributors who have enriched the magazine with their writings, photos, and illustrations over the years. We salute our steadfast advertisers, advocates, and of course, all our readers – we owe our success to you!

Emeric Lau
Editor
The Peranakan Magazine

It is time.
