 nakan Identity is one that has been much debated. How are Peranakans defin
 ed? By genetics? Language? Cultural practices? Way of life?\n\nThis forum 
 will serve as a platform for lively and open discussion about what defines
  a Peranakan.\n\nScientists from the Genome Institute of Singapore\, Profe
 ssors Roger Foo and Wang Chao Long\, will kick off the forum by presenting
  their findings from a ground-breaking study of Peranakan DNA collected fr
 om Singapore Peranakans in 2017 and 2018.\n\nThis will be followed by a di
 scussion with a panel of scholars comprising Prof Leo Suryadinata (Senior 
 Visiting Fellow\, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute)\, historian\, Assistant Pro
 f Seng Guo Quan (Department of History\, National University of Singapore)
 \, Associate Prof Lim Beng Soon (Head\, Malay Language and Literature prog
 ramme\, Singapore University of Social Sciences) and award-winning Peranak
 an author\, Nyonya Josephine Chia. The panel will be moderated by Nyonya D
 awn Marie Lee\, Editor\, THE PERANAKAN magazine.\n\nMembers of the floor w
 ith be invited to join the discourse\, pose questions to the panellists an
 d share their views on Peranakan Identity.\n\nCome with an open mind and e

 STS\n\nPROF ROGER FOO &amp\; PROF WANG CHAO LONG (GENETICS)\nGenome Insti
 tute of Singapore\nProfessors Roger Foo and Wang Chao Long are Principal I
 nvestigators of the Singapore Peranakan Genome Project\, launched in 2017.
 \n\nRoger is a Cardiologist at the National University Hospital Heart Cent
 re and also a Principal Investigator at the Genome Institute of Singapore 
 (A*STAR).\n\nChao Long was a Principal Investigator at the Genome Institut
 e before being headhunted in 2018\, to the Huazhong University of Science 
 and Technology on the Thousand Talents programme in China. Together\, Chao
 long and Roger have been analysing and finding interesting results from th
 e genomes of Peranakan DNA.\nPROF LEO SURYADINATA (SOCIAL SCIENCES)\nISEA
 S-Yusof Ishak Institute\nProfessor Leo Suryadinata is a social scientist. 
 He is currently Visiting Senior Fellow\, ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute (Sing
 apore)\, and Professor (Adj.)\, S. Rajaratnam School of International Stud
 ies\, Nanyang Technological University (NTU).\n\nHe served as Director\, t
 he Chinese Heritage Centre (Singapore\, 2006-2013\, NTU) and was a Profess
 or in the Department of Political Science\, National University of Singapo
 re (NUS) before joining NTU.\n\nHe has edited two books on the Peranakan C
 hinese in Singapore\, Malaysia and Indonesia.\nASSOCIATE PROF LIM BENG SOO
 N (LINGUISTICS)\nSingapore University of Social Sciences\nAssociate Profes
 sor Lim Beng Soon is the Head of Malay Language and Literature at the Sing
 apore University of Social Sciences.\n\nHis main areas of research are Pra
 gmatics\, in particular Malay and English politeness and spoken discourse\
 , Translation and Contact Language in particular Baba Malay and Penang Per
 anakan Hokkien. Prior to joining SUSS he was Associate Professor at the F
 aculty of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Malaya in Kuala L
 umpur.\nASSISTANT PROF SENG GUO-QUAN (HISTORY)\nNational University of Sin
 gapore\nSeng Guo-Quan is Assistant Professor of History at the National Un
 iversity of Singapore. He researches the histories of the Chinese overseas
 \, colonial and postcolonial Southeast Asia\, and global capitalism.\n\nHe
  is currently completing a book manuscript on race\, family and gender in
  the making of Peranakan Chinese identity in Dutch colonial Indonesia.\nNY
 ONYA JOSEPHINE CHIA (PERANAKAN AUTHOR)\nNyonya Josephine Chia is an award
 -winning author who has won Literary awards and prizes in UK and Singapore
 . She writes both fiction and non-fiction about her Peranakan heritage and
  her impoverished kampong(village) upbringing.\n\nHer non-fiction book\, K
 ampong Spirit Gotong Royong (Life in Potong Pasir\, 1955 to 1965) won the 
 Singapore Literature Prize in 2014. Josephine has published twelve books. 
 She nurtures aspiring writers through workshops and mentorship programmes.
 \nMODERATOR\nNYONYA DAWN MARIE LEE\nEditor\, THE PERANAKAN magazine\nNyo
 nya Dawn Marie Lee is a former journalist who now helms THE PERANAKAN\, a
 n award-winning\, volunteer-run magazine published by The Peranakan Associ
 ation Singapore.\n\nThe magazine celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2019. 
 Every issue of the not-for-profit publication is packed with insightful he
 ritage and lifestyle features\, valuable information\, learning opportunit
 ies and other relevant topics that keep readers in touch with the rich Per
 anakan culture.\n\nIts aim is to promote and preserve the cultural heritag
 e of Peranakans worldwide. In 2018\, the magazine clinched the title of Sp
 ecial Interest Media of the Year at the Media Publishers Association Singa
