I am very interested in old Peranakan literature, for example the old Baba publications such as magazines like Kabar Slalu, old chinese translated classics, and old poetry (pantun/panton) books.
Does anyone know where i can buy or view them in Singapore/Malacca/???? i know the National library of Spore has a Microfiche or Microform version which is accessible to the public.
What is unique of this is that its mostly written in our patois, the Baba Malay language.
i can also share with you on my collection of 3 old Baba books.
I also like to read books about peranakan culture. sometimes when I come across one, I would go gaga, try to borrow and photocopy the whole book. So far I have done on 2 books. One is a old magazine about peranakan penang, and the other is on peranakan embroidery which is written by the National Museum years ago.
I'm currently an english literature student and am also very interested in getting hold of peranakan literature to hopefully do some study/write up on. However, getting hold of the sources itself tak senang (isn't easy). I was just wondering if anyone has copies of anything, like old videos, plays, scripts, books, mags, etc. And if you would be so kind as to allow me to make copies of it, I'll be very grateful.
I do believe that the only way to keep the culture alive is to keep the old works relevant and shared. If anything, it would be something for younger peranakans like myself to refer to.
