Tok Panjang is a long table which is favoured by peranakans as the dining table in thier homes. Most chinese homes favour round dining tables. Peranakans opt for a long dining table it is said that they choose a long dining table so as to follow the western influence..???
The tok panjang is use for dining/cherki sessions and the nyonyas/bibiks seated at the far ends would use a rattan cane to get the cherki cards.
The term loak meja tok panjang would mean the food serve to guest on birthdays and weddings.
Loak Tok Panjang is the Peranakan term for a Long Table Feast. The Peranakans, they sure know how to cook and eat. In the old days, for special occasions, they would lay out a long spread of home-cooked favourite dishes on a long table.
For those newcomers or those who did know why it was called tok panjang, the word TOK is a Hokkien word for table and panjang obviously means long in Malay. So it literally means long table.<br>
