I am also wondering just how many of us are left still speaking the traditional Peranakan Malay or Baba Malay at home with the family or with friends. I for one have not done this since my Mum left us many years ago and our cousins also don't as they were mostly born into mainstream Chinese/Peranakan marriages. Otherwise, the English language has been a lot easier to follow as our daily language at work is English although many of the younger generation have switched to Mandarin to help them learn this faster. They still have to converse in English to their Indian and Malay counterparts. Maybe a count of this will also be a worthwhile search into just how many of us still converse in Baba Malay at home and elsewhere. I think that the Malaccans will beat the Singaporeans in this easily, but hear that the Penangites are more into the Penang Hokkien there.
