Common Peranakan words

    This was started as a joke, but it does have some useful words which were used those days and may still be used till today like.....adoi ! Alamak ! Chelaka ! Oh mak lu ! Sial ! sumpah ! sakit hati, sayang, kaya(rich) , bengis, benchi, botak, katek,  kotor, nangis, ma-in judi and lots of others I just can't remember. Chekek dara is a really favourite saying. They are mainly Malay words, but used in everyday life where the Malay language was adopted as the daily language rather then Hokkien. I hope that somebody here can expand on this and clarify where I have gone wrong. Thanks.

    to add a few other very (or in extremely) common words..
    - intan payong (sweetheart/daring)
    - cina-gek (more refering to pure female chinese)
    - cina-te (more refering to pure male chinese)
    - pantat loe (same meaning oso for indonesian, not 4 malays)
    - benak (means stupid)
    - go blok (means dumb/stupid)
    - temberang (means bullshit)
    - bangsat (means bastard)
    - yau shuu (shortcut 4 'pendek umor' in hokkien.)
    - puki mak loe (erm.. u noe wat tis means)
    oh boy, i'd better stop. i think i'm getting into peranakan vulgar language. hahaha!

    From the sound of it, I think its more like o-po-chok or oh po chok or something like that, any ideas Jyun?

    Hi Hocky,

    Its Oh-po-chok.  Its like "Oh my God" or something.  Sometimes you may hear people say "ah per cha" instead.

    It would be highly appreciated if you can help find two or three Baba Malay speakers for me, a senior visiting fellow of our department, who is currently doing a project on the data collection of Baba Malay.  The collected data shall be used for academic research only.  Baba Malya is unique in the sense that it reveals the wisdom of combining different cultures into a harmonic tradition. This project intends to preserve and analyze the linguistic structure of this language from an academic perspective.  However, Baba Malay is scarcely heard in public for the time being.  We are therefore in a bad need of your help.  My team of 3 (one professor and on student) is coming to and staying at Singapore from 9th to 12th February.  We are looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.  Raung-fu

    sudah tengah hari
    sudah petang(evening)
    slamat malam
    chantek nona(pretty girl)
    yan dao(for handsome guy)

    Baba Mathew, lu memang pandei. Tupai di pokok petek buah berangan, simpan dalam lobang makan lama-lama, kalau pasei perkataan peranakan, kehebatan baba mathew tak ada bandingan dimana-mana.<br>

    baba kamsiah lu di praise awa di comment tapi gua mana tak ada bandingan?! sudah banyak lor gua baba melayu di boleh cakap la kenapa takboleh. lu sudah cakap sudah jahat la . dont like this tapi gua di cina orang gua interest di baba tradisi taon satu lagi tapi gua untuk master di baba culture lagi kini.bersama kawan la tidak cakap jahat perkataan la.
