    Hi everyone,

Do note, the lady in black.  Previously I mentioned the kebaya with no sulam at all at the trimmings.  That is the kebaya.

However, the one my friend had was a kebaya with embroideries (taboks) all over her kebaya, but no embroideries at the edges of the kebaya.  However along the edges it is laced with ketok lobang.

    Hi Jyun,

There is a version of robia voile that comes with ready-made embroidery that is scattered with embossed embroidery. This is not to be confused with the 'sulam bertabur' which is embroidered by the tailor.

I believe that when you mentioned 'ketok lobang', you meant making the 'kerawang'? The lace kebaya is called the 'kebaya rendah'. This will not need any embroidery at all since the lace is attached to the kebaya.

    Hi Bunga,

Yup there is kebayas with embroidery that comes originally with the voiles.

Kerawang is the cutwork embroidery.  Ketok Lobang is the openwork hems done onto the seams of the kebaya.

The one I saw is really a kebaya with only embroidery tabok but no sulam on the edges.  What happen was the edges was folded and sewn up then ketok lobang was done onto it.

I see if I can borrow her kebaya to take photo to show you guys.

    Cheers

    ;)

    Hi Jyun,

So sorry that I mistook what you meant ...

Yes if you are talking about the lobang along the seams, its the 'pesak' ... Only local nonyas do this. It is not present in Indonesian kebaya enchim.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could get a picture of the kebaya that you mentioned ... I may not have seen every kind of kebaya. It will be an eye-opener for me!

    Hi Bunga,

Correct me if I am wrong.  So far, most vintage kebayas from Malacca Penang or Medan, I had seen to not have the pesak (Princess Darts) along the front.  Mostly were the Singapore vintage kebayas having them.

I had a chance to speak to the lady boss of Kim Seng along Joo Chiat Road and spoke with her.  She claimed that the pesak is one of the more beautiful features of local kebayas.

Can we darely say, only Singapore nonyas were the earliest group of peranakan ladies to wear kebayas with pesak?

    Dear Jyun,

You are absolutely correct. The 'pesak' in only favoured by the Malayan nonyas of the Straits Settlement of Penang, Malacca and Singapore.

Actually, the 'pesak' is not to beautify the kebaya ... It is meant to enhance the bosom of the wearer. This will give the wearer a shapely figure.
